Exploring Solo: Surakarta's Places to Go
What comes to your mind when you hear “The Spirit of Java?”
Yes, you’re right. The Spirit of Java is Solo City's slogan, and it has become the city's international identity. Solo has a rich cultural heritage, unique cuisine, and interesting tourist attractions that attract many visitors.
You know that feeling when you're itching to go out and
explore, but can't quite decide on the perfect spot? Well, you're in luck! I've
got some hidden gems in Solo that'll make your day absolutely amazing.
If you’re in Yogyakarta right now, you can go to the Solo
via KRL commuter line Jogja-Solo. You've got two choices for departure stations
in Jogja - I personally prefer Tugu Station, but Lempuyangan works just as
well. The cost is only Rp. 8000 for a one-way trip. You can pay using KMT
cards, e-money, or by scanning e-wallet QR codes like GoPay.
The train drops you off at either Solo Balapan or Solo Jebres Station. From there you can take online transportation or if you are not in a hurry and tired, you can walk. It’s only 20 minutes (1.4 km) from Solo Jebres Station to the first destination that we’ll visit.
1. Pasar Gede Solo Hardjonagoro
Pasar Gede Hardjonagoro Solo is the largest and oldest market in Surakarta. This traditional market offers a wide range of daily necessities, including vegetables, fruits, spices, meats, and raw ingredients. Besides serving as a hub for local shopping, it is also a popular tourist destination for both local and international visitors. Pasar Gede Solo has become one of the culinary tourism centers for tourists who want to enjoy Solo’s traditional food. Not only traditional food but there are also many western foods that you will surely like.
- Uma
Yum Cha Dimsum
Uma Yum Cha Dimsum is one of the most talked-about culinary delights in Pasar Gede, located specifically at the second-floor food court. It's been creating a buzz everywhere, so make sure you don’t miss out. The menu features various types of dim sum with different fillings including shrimp, lobster, mushroom, carrot, crab, and smoked beef. The price is incredibly affordable, it’s only Rp. 3000/each. They are open from 8 AM until 10 PM.
- Warung Kopi TFP (The French
Press)
2. Kampung Batik Kauman
From Pasar Gede, you can take a 14-minute walk (1.0 km) to Kampung Batik Kauman. Along the way, you'll pass by Surakarta City Hall. For Muslims, there's a mosque next to City Hall where you can pray. The journey to Kampung Batik Kauman is quite scenic. The beauty and aesthetics of the alleyways with their distinctive Javanese and Dutch architectural styles make this place highly Instagrammable. Besides taking photos, you can also learn batik-making here. If you have extra time, I recommend trying the batik-making experience.
3. Solo Kuthoku café
When you need to rest your feet after exploring and photographing the charming alleys of Kampung Batik Kauman, you can visit the cafés in the Kampung Batik Kauman area, one of which is Kuthoku Café. Here, you can purchase food or beverages, and they even serve ice cream. The place is also very aesthetic, so you can take pictures there as well.
4. Arpha Self photo studio
If you're looking for a different and more private photo experience, visit Arpha Self Photo Studio. They offer a self-service photography concept where you can be your own photographer. Many accessories, from hats and glasses to other unique props, have been prepared there to enhance your photo session. This place is perfect for commemorating a special occasion or simply want to have fun trying different looks, this studio provides the perfect setting.
5. Tanaku kopi
Tanaku
Kopi offers a versatile dining and working experience just a short five-minute
walk from Alpha self-photo studio. This café has a unique interior design with neon
light decorations that add an artistic café atmosphere. There is indoor
non-smoking AC, indoor smoking AC, and outdoor seating, with complete
facilities including WiFi, power port, toilet, and board games. The menu here
is not just coffee but also includes non-coffee beverages, main courses, and
desserts. The price is surprisingly affordable.
6. Ngarsopuro Night Market
From
Tanaku Kopi, we can just walk to Ngarsopuro night market or pasar malam.
This night market is full of bazaars and many stalls, selling food, clothing,
souvenirs, and stuff, do not hesitate to bargain. There's also live music as
well, nice enough to stroll while enjoying the surroundings. Walking a little
further forward, an unexpected delight awaits in the side streets, where closed
shop fronts are transformed into stunning artistic displays, perfect for photo
spots. The Ngarsopuro Night Market is a must-visit destination for anyone
exploring Solo. Please note that this market is only open on Friday and
Saturday evenings from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Solo isn't just a destination—it's a transformative experience waiting to unfold. Whether you're a culture enthusiast, a foodie, a history buff, or simply someone seeking authentic travel experiences, Solo promises memories that will last a lifetime.
